In July, Westminster voted to change the law on abortion in Northern Ireland from 22nd October if the Northern Ireland Executive is not formed before then. NI’s law on abortion currently allows for abortion in cases where there is a threat to the life of the mother or when there is a risk of permanent and serious damage to the mothers mental or physical health. No consultation on the amendment was made with people who actually live in NI and only very limited scrutiny of the proposal took place at Westminster.
What this means.
If the NI Executive is not reformed by October 21st:
Abortion on request will be legalised for any reason, potentially to 28 weeks, 7 months of pregnancy, depending on legal interpretation.
This will mean that abortion on the grounds of disability and sex-selection will become legal for the first time in Northern Ireland.
For five months, from October 22 until March 21, there will be no restriction on where an abortion can take place; no explicit legal protection for medical professionals who conscientiously object to abortion; no requirement to notify an abortion has taken place; and no regulatory body in place to inspect any abortion clinics which would then open in Northern Ireland.
Can this be stopped?
YES. The only way to prevent this new regime coming into force is the restoration of the Northern Ireland Executive by 21st October 2019.
What can you do?
NI Voiceless Protest.
NI Voiceless Protest. On 6th September a silent protest walk is was held at Stormont. Though not organised by CARE, we were fully behind it. More info Click Here.
Soul of the Nation Prayer Event.
On the 2nd September, a prayer event was held at St Anne’s Cathedral. Christians from right across Northern Ireland were invited to pray for Northern Ireland at this difficult time. You can find more information about this event Here.
Contact your MLA and party leaders.
If you haven’t done so, please take a couple of minutes to contact your MLAs. So far thousands of people across Northern Ireland have contacted their MLAs. Helpful link HERE.
Meet your MLAs
Another very effective way you can bring this issue to the attention of our MLAs, is to meet your MLA at their constituency office. If you don’t know who your MLAs are, you can find out at www.writetothem.com.
Fast and pray.
Starting Monday 19th August, we at CARE are encouraging many of our friends and supporters to join us in 40 days of prayer and fasting. We are recommending a version of the a Daniel fast (see Daniel 10:2-3) where he chose amongst other things not to eat “choice food”.
Cry for Mercy prayer event
On Sunday, 13 October, churches across Northern Ireland are being encouraged to open their doors for as long as possible so people can get together to pray for NI and especially that the proposed abortion law changes will be stopped. At CARE NI we are supporting this endeavour to inspire God’s people to pray.
If you are in church leadership or would like to bring this to the attention of your church, we would love you to do so. You can find a really helpful prayer guide here and there is also a handy information sheet with some suggested bible passages to use as well, which you can access here.
A few weeks ago, we sent you a leaflet which had 10 ways you can pray for life in Northern Ireland. To keep inspiring you, you can find the leaflet with all the prayers by clicking here.
